HTML 5 is making a huge splash. It’s like web2.0 all over again. I think it’s a massively important moment in the history of the web, but I also think it’s slightly off-center in terms of where the web should be heading.
It’s difficult to say what the web “started out” as, because there was really no single distinct moment of inception. Sir Tim Berners-Lee cobbled together a program to combine already-extant Internet and hypertext systems, but the primary purpose for this ‘web’ of his was to be a document organization and retrieval system. In fact I think Sir Tim even wanted the web to be editable, so Wikipedia is more or less what he had in mind.
“HTML was primarily designed as a language for semantically describing scientific documents” says the HTML5 spec. The web was comprised mostly of text documents with a few figures thrown in. In fact if we look again at Wikipedia, it’s pretty much the poster-child of semantic markup. It uses almost the entire HTML 4 spec; tables, figures, nested headings, lists, paragraphs, italics, quotations. HTML was literally made for this kind of content.

HTML5 is basically HTML, CSS3, JavaScript and new tags.
HTML5 gallery has  to showcase sites that use HTML5 for markup, so that we can see how people have interpreted the specification and how they’ve implemented it. Check out HTML5Gallery which is to help people learn about html5 and how it should be used and how to implement itA resource for developers looking to put HTML5 to use today, including information on specific features and when to use them in your apps. Did you know that YouTube offers an HTML5 beta program?  Neither did I, until tonight.  Now you will have to opt in, and have a compatable browser.  Also, not all videos are in HTML5, but that is all discussed on the site.  It is great, however, to see that some content has already been transcoded.

So do we have to wait to enjoy everything that HTML 5 has to offer?

Yes, because HTML 5 is a major improvement over previous markup. An improvement that is likely to stay on for a long time. There has been a huge internet growth since HTML 4.01, so design – implementation – adoption by developers and co-ordination with all the major online players is no small task. While most of us will get to enjoy the adoption of some of these great features, a total widespread implementation is likely to take few years as the proposed features evolves over time. They might not even be the same when the final draft rolls out. But, hey you can use HTML5 in your websites as most of the browsers already support HTML5.
